President William Ruto has urged citizens to actively report instances of tax evasion and corruption, highlighting the detrimental impact these practices have on national growth.
“We must all take a stand against tax evasion and corruption,” Ruto emphasized, stressing that those who evade taxes should not be allowed to benefit from public services while denying the government vital resources.
During his address, Ruto pledged to safeguard taxpayer money, asserting, “No funds entrusted to the government will be lost under my watch.”
This statement reflects his administration’s commitment to accountability and transparency in managing public finances.
Citing recent economic improvements, Ruto noted a significant decrease in inflation rates, dropping from 9.2% in 2022 to a commendable 2.7% as of October 2024.
He also highlighted the strengthening of the Kenyan shilling and projected a GDP growth of 5.6% for 2023, underscoring the administration’s efforts to stabilize and enhance the economic environment.
To further augment the country’s fiscal health, Ruto outlined an ambitious plan to raise the tax-to-GDP ratio from the current 14% to 22% over the next decade.
He emphasized the vital role of technology and digital solutions in achieving compliance and enhancing revenue collection.
The integration of digital tools in tax administration is expected to streamline processes, reduce human error, and enhance efficiency in revenue collection.
Ruto’s remarks come at a critical time when the Kenyan government is under pressure to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively and transparently.
The administration’s approach aims not only to increase revenue but also to instill confidence among taxpayers that their contributions are being managed responsibly.
In a country where tax evasion has been a persistent challenge, Ruto’s call for civic engagement in reporting wrongdoing seeks to mobilize public support in the fight against corruption.
The government’s commitment to enhancing economic performance while ensuring accountability may play a pivotal role in restoring faith in Kenya’s financial governance.
