Retired Cabinet Minister and Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has officially resigned from Jubilee Party, signaling that he has no more important work to do in the organization.
In a letter to the party leader and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tuju expressed gratitude to the organization for the trust that he was given when he was with them. He was the Jubilee Secretary-General between 2016 and 2022 and also served as a Cabinet Secretary with no portfolio.
Tuju thanked Kenyatta for taking the daring step of appointing him to this pivotal position. He said he still holds the values they shared in high esteem, but acknowledged that he is no longer able to serve the party in a useful way. “At this time, I can see no other value that I can contribute to Jubilee. For this reason, I hereby resign,” Tuju said.
In retrospect, Tuju noted the effort that went into building Jubilee as a broad national party. He spoke of the dream of unifying Kenyans in a political garb, above tribal affiliations. Though he is leaving the party, he noted that the dream does not lose importance to him.
Tuju further observed that Kenya’s biggest challenges today are not ethnic but economic. He claimed that unemployment and poverty continue to ravage millions of citizens and that is what should be faced by leaders.
Even while he vacates office, Tuju explained that he is not doing so out of animosity. He wished the Jubilee Party and Kenyatta success in their future endeavors. He also indicated his willingness to work with the former president outside the party agenda, particularly those that target community empowerment.
Tuju’s resignation marks the culmination of a very long and dynamic tenure in Jubilee’s leadership. It also occurs when the party has been trying to stay relevant in Kenya’s changing political landscape. His exit joins the list of the premier leaders who have withdrawn from the erstwhile hegemonic political machinery.
