A police truck has been torched following ugly confrontations between anti-riot officers and demonstrators at Huruma Grounds along the Eldoret–Uganda highway. The situation remains tense, with clouds of smoke rising from the scene and running battles continuing between protestors and law enforcement.

Eyewitnesses say the confrontation began after police attempted to disperse a large crowd that had gathered in defiance of earlier warnings. Protesters, many of them youth, responded by pelting officers with stones. In the chaos, one police truck was overrun and set ablaze by the angry mob.

“There was a loud bang, and then the vehicle was on fire,” said one resident. “Everyone scattered when tear gas was fired, but the youths regrouped quickly.”

This latest flare-up comes just hours after a riot officer was critically injured by a stone near Eastleigh, and tensions remain high across Eldoret. Armed groups believed to be hired goons have also been spotted intimidating demonstrators and journalists, further fueling unrest.

Security has since been reinforced around Huruma and the broader Eldoret CBD, as authorities try to contain the unrest that has paralyzed major operations in town. Meanwhile, the Communications Authority’s directive to shut down live media coverage of protests remains in effect, the move has however  been met with strong condemnation from the  Kenya Media Sector Working Group, who have both called it unconstitutional and a direct attack on press freedom. .
