Police officers in Uasin Gishu County have initiated investigations into a Nairobi-based recruitment agency accused of attempting to defraud over 45 youths from Chelabei, Ziwa.
According to County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Daniel Muleli, the agency, identified as Northinking, allegedly lured the youths with promises of lucrative overseas job opportunities.
Skilled individuals were reportedly promised a monthly salary of KSh 70,000, while unskilled workers were assured KSh 40,000.
Speaking to the media, CCIO Muleli revealed that the company is reportedly run by a CEO of Indian nationality, who is yet to be interrogated.
Muleli added that the youths were transported to Eldoret by a boda boda operator, Victor Kiplagat, who facilitated their connection with the agency. Kiplagat is said to have received funds from the agency to cover fuel expenses for the journey.
The youths, led by Amos Koech, narrated that they were initially taken to a field near Boma Inn before being moved to a residence in the Annex area. Sensing suspicious behavior, they alerted the police, leading to the arrest of a suspect.
CCIO Muleli confirmed that Northinking is a licensed recruitment agency operating in Nairobi.
However, he emphasized that the agency had not notified local authorities of its activities in Eldoret, as required by law.
“Eldoret has witnessed several cases of people being conned of their hard-earned money in the past. We are holding the suspect as investigations continue,” Muleli stated.
Police have urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with recruitment agencies, especially those offering overseas job opportunities, and to verify their credentials with relevant authorities.
