Detectives in Eldoret have launched investigations into the alleged sexual assault of a primary school pupil at Living Room International Hospital, with police pursuing a hospital employee who reportedly fled after the incident.

The alleged assault occurred on July 21 within the hospital premises along the Eldoret–Kaptagat Road and has since been reported to both the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the victim’s family, the minor had been taken to the hospital by her parents for medical treatment when she was requested to provide a stool sample. It was during the visit to the hospital’s washrooms that she allegedly encountered a male cleaner who is accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police sources confirmed that the suspect, who is said to be a father, remains at large as detectives intensify efforts to trace and arrest him.

The incident has sparked outrage from the family, who have engaged legal counsel to pursue justice for their daughter.

Family Says Child Traumatised

Speaking after reporting the matter to authorities, the girl’s father said the incident had left his daughter psychologically distressed and unable to resume learning.

He said the child has been struggling to recover from the ordeal, describing the alleged assault as devastating for the family.

“I am shocked that such an act took place at a hospital that was established on the principles of promoting dignified treatment for the sick and receives significant financial support from churches and Christian donors both locally and in the United States,” the father said.

He further criticized the hospital’s response, claiming the management had done little to assure the family that justice would be served.

“The management has taken no meaningful initiative to ensure justice is served, and that goes against everything they claim to stand for. I am urging the police to immediately investigate this matter because we cannot be certain whether other patients, including children, may have suffered similar abuse while seeking treatment,” he added.

Hospital Declines to Comment

When contacted, Living Room International Hospital Director Titus Boit declined to discuss the matter, citing the ongoing police investigations.

“We are unable to comment because the matter is under investigation,” Boit told the media.

The hospital has not issued a public statement regarding the incident.

Police Investigations Underway

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have commenced inquiries into the alleged assault and are expected to interview hospital staff, review available evidence, and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities are also pursuing the suspect, who reportedly disappeared after the incident was reported.

No arrests had been made by the time of publication.

Hospital Founded on Christian Mission

The allegations have drawn significant public attention given the reputation of Living Room International Hospital, a faith-based Level 4 health facility located approximately 9.4 kilometres from Eldoret Central Business District along the Eldoret–Kaptagat Road.

The 91-bed hospital is operated by Living Room Ministries International, a Christian-based organization founded by Pastor David Tarus. The institution was established with support from local and international Christian partners and integrates faith-based values into healthcare delivery.

According to the organization’s mission, the hospital seeks to provide compassionate and dignified medical care while receiving financial, spiritual and volunteer support from churches and Christian organizations in Kenya and the United States.

In August 2023, the facility officially opened its expanded hospital complex during a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto, then serving as Deputy President when he supported the project’s development. During the event, Ruto praised the collaboration between the church, non-governmental organizations and private partners in establishing the facility and pledged government support for its operations.

The latest allegations now threaten to cast a shadow over the institution’s image as police work to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The victim’s family says it remains determined to pursue justice as investigators continue their search for the suspect. Police have urged anyone with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest to report to the nearest police station or contact investigators handling the case.
