Police Arrest Suspects in Alleged Theft from Eldoret High Court Judge’s Residence
“The Judge is believed to have lost over five million shillings in cash and other valuables during the move”
Police in Ainabkoi Sub-county, Uasin Gishu County, have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged theft of a significant amount of cash and personal items from the residence of Eldoret High Court Presiding Judge, Reuben Nyakundi.
The suspects, reportedly entrusted with moving the Judge’s belongings to a new residence, were implicated after the Judge discovered that several items, including watches and an undisclosed amount of cash, were missing.
The theft occurred in the Juniorate area on the outskirts of Eldoret City, and the police are actively pursuing additional suspects involved in the case.
Investigating Officer Constable Jane Kariuki, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kapsoya Police Station, stated that the suspects have provided crucial information about the whereabouts of their accomplices. “We are conducting a manhunt to ensure all those involved in the theft are apprehended and the stolen items are recovered,” she noted in her court application.
The suspects were arraigned before Eldoret Principal Magistrate Cheronoh Kesse to face charges of stealing, contrary to Section 268(1) as read with Section 275 of the Penal Code. However, they were not allowed to take a plea as the investigating officer sought more time to arrest additional suspects and recover the stolen property.
“It became apparent to the complainant that his watches and significant personal property went missing during the movement of his belongings,” the investigating officer explained. She added that the theft was reported on December 18, 2024, at Kapsoya Police Station under OB 13/18/12/2024.
Court documents reveal that the suspects were arrested on December 19, 2024, in the Juniorate area by Kapsoya Police officers.
In her ruling, Magistrate Kesse released the suspects on a personal bond of Ksh. 100,000 each, pending their plea-taking scheduled for January 16, 2025.
The police have assured the public that all efforts are being made to bring the remaining suspects to justice and recover the stolen items.
