A section of Pioneer Estate residents in Uasin Gishu County has decried the piling up of garbage within the residential estate and along the pavements, a situation that they have termed a public health risk.
These residents have scolded the Municipal Council of Eldoret town and the relevant county department over what they have regarded as negligence of its core mandate in collecting and ensuring proper waste disposal.
According to Nelson Kipkemei, a tenant in that area, lack of disposal bins in that residential area has greatly contributed to this menace which could soon lead to an outbreak of diseases.
“The plots surrounding this area do not have designated places to dispose-off their waste and Garbage and this in turn leaves them with no option than to discard the garbage onto the roads and waste water ways,” stated Kipkemei.
Kipkemei has warned that with the onset of rains the blocked water ways could also lead to flash floods and a catastrophic outbreak of diseases.
“If the garbage is not removed from this place and the downpour falls, this will automatically lead to eruption of diseases such as Cholera and other diseases linked to dirty environments,” said Kipkemei.
The Hue and cry of the Pioneer residents on the outskirts of Eldoret town comes at a time the county government is gearing up for the conferment of Eldoret town to City status.
A report from Eldoret Water and Sewerage Services (ELDOWAS) Managing Director, Peter
Biwott had earlier emphasized that the Department of Public Health ought to enhance its public awareness programs aimed at educating the public on the need to maintain high levels of hygiene, which involves proper garbage disposal
