Voting in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election turned dramatic on Thursday after a crowd chased away a man from a polling station in Nyandarua County.
The incident happened as residents were electing a new Member of the National Assembly to replace Jubilee MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who died on March 29, 2026.
According to The Star, the man was standing on raised ground surrounded by voters. Moments later, the crowd became angry and he was forced to climb down and run away as people pursued him.
The crowd could be heard chanting, “Anapeana pesa kwa nini? Hafai kupatiana pesa. Hatutaki pesa,” which translates to “Why is he giving out money? He should not be giving out money. We do not want money.”
The Star reports that the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation were not immediately clear and the claims implied by the chants could not be independently verified.
The drama unfolded even as voting continued under heavy security, with authorities deployed to ensure a peaceful process. The Ol Kalou by-election is being closely watched as a litmus test for political influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
