Nyeri County has registered its first Mpox case, making it the 23rd county in Kenya to report the disease.

The health officials confirmed that the patient was a 60-year-old woman. She recently traveled from Nairobi to Mathira East before she tested positive for the virus.

Kenya has reported 314 confirmed Mpox cases since the outbreak began in July 2024. The infections were also reported in 22 counties, which include Mombasa (146), Busia (63), Nakuru (21), Kilifi (19), Nairobi (17), and Makueni (13). Other infected counties include Taita Taveta (5), Uasin Gishu (5), Bungoma (4), Kajiado (3), Kakamega (3), Kiambu (3), Kericho (2), Machakos (2), Migori (1), Kisii (1), Kirinyaga (1), Isiolo (1), Kitui (1), Narok (1), Baringo (1), and Trans-Nzoia (1).

Four others have been recently spotted—three in Mombasa and one in Nairobi. The most hit county remains Mombasa, with 138 cases reported and five deaths so far.

The Ministry of Health has stepped up surveillance around the country. It is working with county governments and health partners to monitor and contain the spread.

Rapid Response Teams have also been deployed to the different areas. They are enhancing the competency of the health workers, tracing contacts, investigating suspected cases, and providing treatment to confirmed patients.

The ministry is also undertaking mental health and psychosocial support for those infected and their families.

Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale reported 33 Mpox patients under hospital care in various health facilities. Another 54 patients are quarantined in their homes under medical surveillance.

Authorities requested that the public be cautious and report the suspected symptoms immediately. Prevention by staying away from infected individuals and proper hygiene remains crucial in preventing further transmission.
