Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) Report, which includes amending the 2010 Constitution to create the position of Prime Minister.

Cherargei has proposed that the role be given to opposition leader Raila Odinga, arguing that the country should not let his leadership and vast political experience go to waste, as he claims happened at the African Union.

“We cannot allow such brilliant leadership and experience to go to waste the way the African Union did. This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in Kenya,” Cherargei stated.

His remarks come just days after Odinga lost his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

Odinga had been a strong contender for the position, garnering significant support from some African nations, but ultimately failed to clinch the seat.

The NADCO Report, which emerged from bipartisan discussions between the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance and the opposition Azimio la Umoja coalition, proposed several governance reforms, including the reintroduction of the Prime Minister’s post.

Cherargei’s call for the implementation of the NADCO proposals comes amid heated debate over constitutional amendments, with critics arguing that the move is politically motivated and aimed at accommodating specific individuals rather than addressing governance challenges.

Some leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration have opposed the idea, citing concerns over the cost of expanding the government and the need to focus on economic recovery rather than political restructuring.

Odinga, who has been a central figure in Kenya’s political landscape for decades, has not publicly commented on Cherargei’s proposal.

However, his allies have maintained that the opposition leader remains committed to championing democratic reforms and pushing for better governance in the country.
