The Njoro Constituency farmers in Nakuru County have notified authorities about their suspicion of a livestock disease outbreak which they believe to be lumpy skin disease. The farmers report that several animals have become sick from the disease while three cows have died during the past three months.

Dr. Michael Cheruiyot, who serves as Nakuru County Chief Officer for Livestock, rejected the assertion that lumpy skin disease caused the cow deaths. He believes that the animals died because they were suffering from unknown health issues.

At his Septenok village visit in Nessuit Ward, George Chepkwony described his cow health emergency when he reached out to a veterinary officer for help after his cow became sick. The animal died after the treatment attempt.

Chepkwony invested a large sum of money to treat the sick cow which had been giving eight liters of milk in the morning and five liters in the evening before its illness.

Several farmers at Sigotik sub-location Assistant Chief Sammy Kirui reported extraordinary health problems which their livestock have developed. He explained that the animals have displayed strange behavioral patterns which have made the villagers concerned.

The farmers believe that local veterinary officers who received information about the situation have not accomplished enough to solve the existing issue according to Kirui. He called for immediate county government action to investigate the situation.

The county maintains active surveillance of the situation according to Dr. Cheruiyot. The county plans to create an extensive report which will identify the issue’s root causes and develop solutions to assist farmers who have been impacted.
