Nakuru-based businessman and philanthropist Maina Wakaburu has been questioned by detectives at the Rift Valley Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nakuru regarding the recent anti-tax protests in the country.

Wakaburu presented himself at the DCI offices on Tuesday, accompanied by his lawyer Collins Odungo, and was questioned for about an hour.

The businessman confirmed he was called upon by Nakuru East Criminal Investigation Director Samuel Ngeiywo to provide details on the anti-tax protests.

According to his lawyer Odungo, CID Ngeiywo alleged that he had received information that Wakaburu had met with youths and funded their protests to burn the homes and business premises of prominent politicians.

“I summoned Wakaburu after receiving an intelligence report that he was mobilizing youths and goons to carry out criminal activities to vandalize politicians’ abodes and property within Nakuru East,” said Ngeiywo.

Odungo stated that the summons were driven by politicians who believed his client was gaining influence by interacting with residents and thus using government agencies to silence him.

“I did not meet any protesters nor fund them because I respect my area MP. If one makes a mistake, they should be corrected but not silenced by security agencies,” said Wakaburu.

According to Wakaburu’s lawyer Odungo, statements have been recorded and no charges have been filed against his client. They now await further communication from the officer.
