Promoting Peace in a Diverse Constituency

On Sunday Kipchumba Murkomen launched the Cherangany Unity Cup at Makutano Primary School located in Cherangany Trans-Nzoia County. He urged the community to maintain peace and unity in this culturally diverse rural area which represents one of Kenya’s most ethnically varied regions.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary described Cherangany as an exemplary community which demonstrates peaceful coexistence between multiple ethnic groups who have inhabited the area since its founding.

He observed that Cherangany ranks among Kenya’s most multi-ethnic rural constituencies, adding that its diversity remains a major strength. Murkomen called on people to protect peace and unity because these values serve as the essential elements needed for shared community progress.

Tournament to Nurture Talent and Curb Drug Abuse

The month-long competition will feature 112 football teams and 63 volleyball teams from all seven wards of Cherangany Constituency. Organisers planned the tournament to reach its final stage through a grand championship match which will feature valuable awards to motivate young athletes and develop sports talent from basic levels.

Murkomen explained that the Unity Cup functions as a community service which handles alcohol and drug problems that affect young people in Trans-Nzoia County. He stated that the tournament provides young people with a safe space to use their energy for positive activities while learning important skills and staying away from dangerous activities.

The Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the government will continue its collaboration with local leaders and security forces and community members to combat the increasing problem of alcohol and drug abuse which has emerged in the area.

Leaders Rally Behind the Initiative

The event was attended by Eric Mutai the Kericho County Governor and Allan Chesang the Trans-Nzoia Senator and Kakai Bisau the Kiminini Member of Parliament and Gideon Oyagi the Trans-Nzoia County Commissioner and other officials from both county and national government.

The event leaders supported the initiative because it would create social bonds between community members while providing young people with opportunities to develop their skills through participation in sports and community service.
