Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, addressed the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture today, outlining measures aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the upcoming Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections.

Scheduled for December 7, 2024, this election process is viewed as a crucial step in reforming the governance structures of sports federations in the country.

During his vetting for this prestigious position, Murkomen pledged to the nation a comprehensive reform of the sports sector, highlighting the significance of adhering to established legal frameworks, particularly concerning term limits and the election processes for various sports federations.

“We shall reform the governance of our sports to pave the way for the full enjoyment of socioeconomic benefits that they bring,” Murkomen asserted.

In a proactive approach, the Office of the Sports Registrar, under Murkomen’s leadership, has initiated several key measures to bolster the integrity of the FKF elections.

A verified list of registered clubs has been submitted to the FKF Electoral Board.

Additionally, it is now mandatory for all electoral candidates to undergo regulatory checks by relevant government bodies, ensuring strict compliance with the Sports Act.

Murkomen emphasized the importance of an independent electoral panel for FKF, which will oversee the election process.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that the elections will be conducted in an open manner, with independent observers from various sports organizations and the Ministry present to validate the credibility of the process.

He also pointed out that any disputes arising from the elections will be settled by the Sports Disputes Tribunal, providing a fair and impartial avenue for resolving grievances.

This move is seen as an effort to restore public confidence in sports governance in Kenya, a sector that has faced criticism over the years regarding mismanagement and lack of transparency.

Murkomen’s unwavering commitment to accountability aims to enhance the credibility of sports organizations, thereby reinforcing the integrity of Kenya’s sporting institutions.

As the countdown to the FKF elections continues, stakeholders and sports enthusiasts alike are hopeful that these reforms will not only foster a fair electoral environment but also lead to a renaissance in Kenyan sports, ultimately benefiting athletes and fans across the nation.
