On opening the schools for the 2026 academic year, Murang’a County moved in the main pillar of supporting education through airing out the bursary for high achievers and vulnerable learners. It is part of the commitment among county governments to improving access to education and strengthening academic excellence throughout public institutions.

Murang’a County has awarded term-one bursaries to the most promising students from public day secondary schools in preparation for the 2026 academic year. This is expected to ease the financial burden on parents while convincing learners to uphold high academic standards.

Speaking at Ihura Stadium, Governor Irungu Kang’ata stated that the initiative is intended to motivate competition and improve academics for bright but needy learners. He noted that education remains one cardinal pillar for development in the county. “Investment in learners is an investment in the future of Murang’a,” he emphasized.

Here, bursaries were given to the top 10 students of every class in every public day secondary school across the board. The governor explained that this will be for bursary allocation purely on merit and also healthy competition at all levels of learning.

Besides the secondary school child learners, the county government is also set to benefit junior school children. The county also gave out one-off cheques of Sh10,000 to 520 top performers in the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and an additional Sh5,000 to 500 learners with disabilities in special needs schools. The step was appreciated by many parents and stakeholders in the education sector, who termed it as inclusive and considerate towards learners with special needs.

Governor Kang’ata urged learners to remain disciplined and focused, commended teachers for their dedication, and advised residents to seek other support from another funding source such as the NG-CDF. He also recognized the role played by teachers and parents in the success of learners and called for continued collaboration in uplifting education standards.

Residents that attended the event welcomed the bursary disbursement, stating that it would help in reducing school dropout rates and increasing retention, mostly of those coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Education officials who were present reiterated the determination of the county to strengthen learning outcomes and make sure no child is left behind as a result of financial challenges.
