Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced major progress in the financing of the multibillion-shilling Nairobi Central Station project, the flagship initiative at the heart of the ambitious Nairobi Railway City.

In a statement shared on his verified social media accounts, Mudavadi revealed that a key briefing had been held between the National Treasury and UK Export Finance (UKEF) to finalize the terms of funding.

The Nairobi Central Station project is a cornerstone of the larger Nairobi Railway City development, which spans 438 acres. It is set to transform urban mobility and stimulate inclusive economic growth across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.

“This is more than just infrastructure—it’s a gateway to enhanced mobility and economic renewal,” Mudavadi stated, emphasizing the project’s strategic value for Kenya’s urban future.

The financing breakthrough follows a joint commitment made by President William Ruto and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024.

The two leaders had pledged to collaborate on infrastructure investments that align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the UK’s Global Gateway strategy.

In addition to the railway project, Mudavadi noted that advanced discussions are ongoing to fast-track Kenya’s commitments to other major transport initiatives. These include the upcoming rollout of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 3 and the expansion of Commuter Rail Lines 2 and 5.

“These discussions are critical ahead of the upcoming Government of Kenya and G7+ Transport Heads of Mission meeting,” he said, signaling strong international cooperation on the country’s urban transport plans.

The Railway City initiative is expected to not only ease congestion in Nairobi’s central business district but also create jobs, attract investment, and reduce carbon emissions through modern, efficient public transport systems.

With financing talks nearing completion and infrastructure plans gaining momentum, the Nairobi Railway City is poised to become a model for sustainable urban development in Africa.
