Mombasa County Nominated Senator Miraj Abdilahi has launched a one million tree planting exercise aimed at addressing the plight of climatic change.

 

She said the campaign will be extended throughout the Coast region.

 

The vocal senator said she is targeting to plant over one million trees in the coast region.

 

”My aim is to plant one million trees in the Coast , this will help in eradicating the  negative effects brought about by climatic changes,” said Miraj.

 

The senator was speaking to the media at Mwangala Primary School in Likoni  Mombasa county.

 

She urged both human rights organisations and government institutions to support her tree planting bid.

“I’m calling on both government institutions and civil society organizations to join hands in a bid to make sure that this exercise becomes a success,” she noted.

 

This she said will ensure that the environment in the Coast region is taken care of.

 

She also pointed out that she will reach out to government institutions to provide land for her tree planting initiative.

 

Miraj explained that through her Miraj Abdillahi Foundation she has started planting mangrove trees in Jomvu sub county.

 

”I will reach out to government institutions so that they can provide land for this initiative, we need to plant more  trees in our  green spaces ” she said.

 

On his part Mombasa County Commissioner John Otieno said the government in collaboration with leaders and locals will spearhead in tree planting exercise in areas adversely affected by drought.

 

The CC further urged Kenyans from all walks of life to plant more trees as a way of curbing the impacts of drought.

 

”As government we shall join hands with both leaders and Kenyans so that we can plant more trees, We are experiencing this drought because of lack of trees and the degradation of our environment,” The administrator noted

 

He added that the ongoing drought in various parts of the country is due to lack of trees that attract rain.
