Moi University students took to the streets of Eldoret yesterday to protest the newly introduced funding model, which they claim disproportionately affects students from low-income backgrounds. Holding placards, the students voiced their concerns, saying the cost of education under the new model is unaffordable for many from humble families.

The demonstration caused significant traffic disruptions in Eldoret town, with police officers deployed to maintain order and safeguard the protesters.

Speaking to the media during the protest, Juma Ndege, one of the student leaders, emphasized the financial burden the new system places on students. “We performed exceptionally well in high school and secured admission to university, but now we are being priced out by these exorbitant fees. Many of us simply can’t afford it,” Ndege explained.

The students expressed their disappointment with the government’s promises to support the poor, accusing it of instead imposing hardships on both students and their families. “When they came into office, they pledged to help the less fortunate, but now they are exploiting us and our parents,” Ndege added.

He further stated that with the current economic challenges, even basic needs like food are hard to meet, let alone paying for tuition. “We will not accept this funding model. Many of us fear dropping out of university because we can’t afford the fees, and we have younger siblings who also need to go to school,” he lamented.

The students also criticized the university’s administration, accusing the vice chancellor of prioritizing the institution’s interests over the welfare of the students.

The protest ended peacefully, but the students vowed to continue opposing the new funding model until their grievances are addressed.
