Moi University has announced the successful completion of a major solar energy installation project in partnership with renewable energy firm Afriwatt, aimed at reducing the institution’s electricity costs and promoting clean energy.

Speaking during the commissioning of the project at the university’s main campus, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut revealed that the second phase of the initiative has taken five months to complete and now provides the institution with a significant portion of its power needs through solar energy.

Prof. Kotut noted that prior to the project, the university incurred electricity bills of up to Ksh.25 million monthly. With the installation of the solar system, this cost has dropped to approximately Ksh.10 million, significantly easing the university’s financial burden.

“We were forced to sensitize both students and staff on the importance of energy conservation. We discouraged the use of electric coils in hostels as part of our effort to reduce consumption,” said Prof. Kotut.

He also highlighted that the institution currently has over 220 dormant power accounts, which previously contributed to the unsustainable costs.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the university will continue to engage the wider community in the importance of adopting clean energy solutions, as part of a long-term sustainability strategy.

In addition to the solar energy initiative, Prof. Ongeti, a senior academic at Moi University, noted that the institution is exploring the production of ammonia, which is expected to play a key role in the manufacture of fertilizer. This development, he said, will benefit local farmers and support food security in the region.

The partnership with Afriwatt marks a significant milestone in Moi University’s transition towards green energy and cost-efficient operations.
