Moi University has announced an immediate suspension of all learning and teaching activities following a special meeting by the University Senate.

The decision was shared on Thursday, October 3,2024, in an official internal memo signed by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac S. Kosgey, and later confirmed on the university’s verified social media platforms.

According to the communication, the suspension affects the entire institution, including all its campuses, following industrial action by university staff and subsequent unrest among students.

In the memo, dated October 3rd, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the 1st semester of the 2024/2025 academic year will be paused indefinitely.

The official announcement was also verified by hubzmedia.africa, the suspension is a direct response to a series of disruptions stemming from the staff’s industrial action, compounded by growing student concerns.

This industrial action has significantly hampered the normal running of academic programs, prompting the university to take immediate action to safeguard the welfare of both staff and students.

“All students in all campuses should vacate the University premises with immediate effect,” reads the memo, emphasizing that those in university halls of residence should also vacate immediately.

In addition, international students are urged to liaise with the Dean of Students for guidance on their next steps.

While the announcement was abrupt, it highlights Moi University’s dedication to addressing the crisis and ensuring normalcy returns as soon as possible.

The Vice-Chancellor assured the university community that management is actively working to restore operations, though a reopening date has not yet been provided.

The communication further stated that updates regarding resumption will be communicated in due course.

This latest development has raised concerns among students, many of whom are unsure of the future of their studies.

However, the memo called on students to maintain calm and remain patient while the university deals with the prevailing situation.

The institution acknowledged the strain caused by the disruptions but expressed confidence that the university will soon return to normal operations.

The strike that has led to the university’s closure is part of broader labor grievances within the education sector, with staff calling for better working conditions and remuneration.

Moi University’s management and students now await a resolution to the standoff, with the hope that academic activities will resume soon.
