A suspected motorcycle thief was brutally burned to death on Tuesday night in Eldoret’s central business district by a group of enraged Boda Boda riders. The incident occurred in full view of hundreds of bystanders, who gathered at the scene as the events unfolded. Police later arrived and cordoned off the area, removing the body, which was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary. Authorities have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This shocking episode is not an isolated case in Eldoret. Late last year, a similar incident occurred near the same location, opposite the Eldoret High Court, where another suspected motorcycle thief was apprehended and set ablaze by members of the public. The incident followed an attempted robbery in the Block Ten area of Uasin Gishu County.

Such acts of mob justice have raised concerns among law enforcement and human rights advocates. Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi had previously addressed the issue of motorcycle thefts in the region, stating that law enforcement had dismantled a major criminal syndicate involved in receiving and distributing stolen motorcycles and parts. on lawful channels for addressing such issues.

Investigations  are ongoing, as authorities work to address the root causes of these violent acts and restore public confidence in the justice system.
