In a significant development aimed at enhancing healthcare service delivery, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services held a crucial meeting with the Council of Governors’ Human Resources, Labor, and Social Welfare Committee.

The committee, led by Nairobi Governor H.E. Johnson Sakaja and Health Committee Chairperson H.E. Muthomi Njuki, focused on addressing the pressing issues raised by the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO).

The dialogue centered on resolving the grievances of clinical officers, ensuring their concerns are met to prevent disruptions in the county health facilities. The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining seamless healthcare services across the country.

“We are dedicated to addressing the concerns of clinical officers. Their role is indispensable in our healthcare system,” stated the Principal Secretary for Medical Services. “Our discussions with the Council of Governors have been productive, and we have agreed on a collaborative approach to ensure the issues raised by KUCO are swiftly and effectively addressed.”

Key among the resolutions was the assurance that the process to empanel and contract health facilities licensed by the Clinical Officers Council is progressing.

This initiative is expected to guarantee the payment of Service Health Allowance (SHA) benefits to clinical officers, a critical aspect of their demands.

In light of the commitments made, the Principal Secretary urged KUCO to call off the ongoing strike. “We urge KUCO to call off the strike in the spirit of cooperation, as significant strides have been made towards meeting their demands,” the PS emphasized. “Our priority is to ensure that health services in county facilities remain uninterrupted, and we believe this collaborative effort will achieve that.”

The meeting’s outcomes signal a positive trajectory for resolving labor issues in the health sector, which have previously threatened to disrupt service delivery.

Both the Ministry of Health and the Council of Governors have pledged to continue engaging with KUCO and other stakeholders to foster a conducive working environment for clinical officers.

Governor Johnson Sakaja expressed optimism about the resolution, highlighting the importance of dialogue in addressing labor disputes. “We are committed to working hand in hand with the Ministry of Health and clinical officers to ensure that healthcare services are delivered efficiently and effectively,” he said.

H.E. Muthomi Njuki also reiterated the commitment to maintaining open lines of communication with KUCO and other health sector stakeholders.

“Our healthcare workers are our backbone, and their welfare is paramount. We will continue to prioritize their concerns,” he affirmed.

The Ministry of Health and the Council of Governors’ collaborative approach is expected to pave the way for a more stable and efficient healthcare system, benefiting both healthcare providers and the public.
