The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with IntraHealth International and other stakeholders, celebrated the successful conclusion of two transformative health initiatives—Large Grant 46 (LG 46) and Large Grant 73 (LG 73)—during a close-out event that highlighted their achievements and laid the groundwork for sustainability.
LG 46 focused on enhancing leadership, management, and governance among Primary Health Care (PHC) managers in 10 counties.
This initiative has been instrumental in equipping healthcare leaders with the skills needed to improve service delivery, strengthen decision-making, and foster a more responsive healthcare system.
Meanwhile, LG 73 assessed Kenya’s readiness to implement the Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) cadre, a critical step toward advancing the nursing profession and improving healthcare services nationwide.
The APN initiative aims to empower nurses with advanced training and responsibilities, enabling them to play a more significant role in addressing complex healthcare needs.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, speaking at the event, commended the projects for their contributions to Kenya’s health sector and the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
“Strengthening healthcare leadership and empowering nurses are critical to achieving UHC. These projects have provided valuable insights and tools to support the transformation of our health system,” she stated.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, health sector leaders, and development partners, to reflect on the milestones achieved and share lessons learned from the initiatives.
Discussions focused on strategies to ensure the sustainability of the projects’ outcomes, particularly in integrating APN roles into Kenya’s healthcare system and fostering leadership at the PHC level.
The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to building a robust healthcare workforce and ensuring that nurses continue to play a central role in transforming Kenya’s health landscape.
By advancing nursing practices and enhancing leadership capacity at the grassroots, the Ministry aims to address systemic challenges and deliver more equitable and effective healthcare services.
As Kenya continues to prioritize Universal Health Coverage, the success of LG 46 and LG 73 serves as a testament to the power of partnerships and innovation in strengthening health systems.
These initiatives leave a lasting impact on the country’s journey toward a healthier, more inclusive future.
