Medical experts have raised alarm over the increasing number of vision impairment cases globally, urging the public to prioritize early detection and timely treatment.

Globally, more than two billion people are living with some form of vision impairment, with an additional one billion affected by preventable or reversible blindness. Health professionals warn that without urgent intervention, the numbers could continue to rise.

Speaking during the launch of an eye clinic in Eldoret, Dr. Amos Kiptoo, an ophthalmologist at Siloam Eye Centre, attributed the growing burden to common but often neglected conditions.

“Most of the cases we are seeing are caused by common eye allergies, undetected refractive errors, and cataracts, which are still very prevalent in our communities,” said Dr. Kiptoo.

He emphasized that many people delay seeking medical attention, worsening their condition over time.

“Early detection is key. If patients come in for regular check-ups, many of these conditions can be managed or even corrected before they lead to serious vision loss,” he added.

Dr. Kiptoo also highlighted the need to address misconceptions surrounding cornea donation, noting that fear and lack of awareness have hindered efforts to restore sight to those in need.

“We need to demystify the fear around cornea donation. It is a safe and life-changing procedure that can help restore vision for many patients suffering from corneal blindness,” he explained.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, who was present during the launch, echoed these sentiments, calling for increased awareness and access to eye care services.

“If we invest in early diagnosis and treatment, many deserving patients will have their vision restored and their quality of life improved,” said the governor.

He further reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services, particularly in specialized areas such as eye care, to ensure residents receive timely and affordable treatment.
