A third-year student’s life at Maseno University was on Monday cut short by a live bullet from a police officer’s gun during the ongoing anti-government protests along the busy Kisumu-Busia Highway.
A viral video taken by one of the students in the scene revealed that the student was shot in the neck.
The students gathered in front of the vice chancellor’s office demanding action to be taken against the law enforcers but they were dispersed not only using teargas but also brutal beatings.
The demos were peaceful until the men in uniform engaged the students with teargas canisters which led to running battles around the university, despite the heavy rains.
An unidentified source revealed that another comrade was allegedly shot in the arm and was quickly rushed to the hospital for medication.
The chairman of the Student Organization of Maseno University, SOMU, is said to have led the angry students to Maseno Law Courts to demand justice for the fallen comrade but no official reports have been reported yet with regards to the visit.
Whereabouts of where the boy’s corpse has been taken still remains unknown.
The students have been called upon to exercise patience and maintain peace as they wait for an official communication from their leaders on Tuesday.
