Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi has spoken about his future, leaving the entire world on edge.
The 37-year-old, who has just led Argentina to the country’s long-awaited FIFA World Cup triumph in 2022, did not commit to a definite timeline for his retirement but insinuated that his days in international football may be coming to an end.
Speaking to the media, Messi wished to live the moment and not really care about what is next.
“I haven’t set any date or deadline regarding my future,” Messi said. “I just want to enjoy all of this.”
This is a statement depicting Messi’s satisfaction with his present state of life, especially in light of the enormous success he has seen in the past few years with both club and country.
The most important thing that came from Messi, however, was how he underlined the peculiarity of the bond he has with Argentina and its people.
“It moves me more than ever to be in Argentina and feel the love of the people because I know these could be my last matches.” Stated Messi.
This breadth of emotion has, therefore, convinced many that Messi might be planning his exit from international football sooner rather than later.
Of late, Messi’s homecoming to Argentina has been an emotional one. With him finally managing to lift the World Cup, he has been hailed as a messiah across the country, with such a feat touted as one of the greatest players the beautiful game has ever seen.
That deep bond with his country always motivated the iconic forward, as he talked on many occasions about the relevance of representing his country on a global scale.
There is still magic in the twilight of Messi’s career; since moving from Paris Saint-Germain, he has shone brightly for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, showing that skills and vision remain razor-sharp.
Undoubtedly more significant, though, are the decisions that pertain to his future with the Argentine national team.
It remains uncertain, though, if Messi will appear in the 2024 Copa América or in the next World Cup cycle, but comments by him insinuate that every match with the Albiceleste is all the more valuable.
While fans live by the hope of seeing Messi wear the famous blue-and-white jersey of Argentina for a bit longer, it is obvious that this phase of his career is being enjoyed by the player, who is grasping everything that entails living full moments.
