Agustus Muli, the leader of the Liberal Party of Kenya, has issued a stern warning against political interference in the ongoing recruitment process for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking to the media outside their office in Kitui, Muli emphasized the importance of an objective and transparent selection process for the new chairperson and commissioners.

“The process of determining the IEBC commissioners should not be interfered with by political leaders. It must be fair and transparent,” Muli stated, underscoring the need for integrity in the selection process.

Muli further called for greater inclusivity in the IEBC, advocating for the representation of youths and people living with disabilities in the electoral body.

“The elected commissioner should be inclusive of people living with different statuses, such as people living with disabilities and all the youth,” he added.

The Liberal Party leader expressed concern over the involvement of leaders from the UDA, WIPER, and ODM parties in the consultations regarding the composition of the IEBC.

He suggested that political parties should convene for a meeting to discuss the issue but cautioned against any undue influence during the selection process.

“Political parties are supposed to convene for a meeting, and this will be important in determining the composition of the IEBC commissioners,” Muli said.

He further emphasized that political kingpins should refrain from participating in the selection process and allow the selection panel to carry out their duties without external interference.

“There should be no reference to the selection panel. I urge political leaders to allow the panel to do their work, deliver on time, and ensure the process is transparent,” Muli added.

Muli also warned that the IEBC should not be seen as a political asset to be controlled by a few prominent leaders.

He reiterated that the commission is a crucial institution that must remain independent and free from political manipulation.
