Construction of Lessesia Secondary School in Taveta Constituency in the County of Taita Taveta has reached an impressive 70% level. The building project, which is about to reach the final roof-dressing stage—the final big step—is proceeding smoothly and is due for completion according to schedule in preparation to admit its first cohort next year.
The ambitious academic undertaking was initiated in December 2024, when President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. The university is a government achievement in its entire agenda to increase access to quality education at the senior school level under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The new school will be a three-storey, modern complex to house 20 well-ventilated and spacious classrooms. It will also have four well-furnished science laboratories for hands-on learning, two high-tech libraries for research work and study, and several other mandatory administrative areas such as principal’s and deputy principal’s offices, staffroom, and sanitation blocks. They are specifically constructed to ensure an efficient and comfortable environment to learn.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo stated that Lessesia Secondary will be strictly a senior school and is set to commence admitting its first Grade 10 pupils in the following school calendar year. This is in line with the national implementation of CBC at senior school.
The establishment of Lessesia Secondary School will most likely have a revolutionary impact on the education sector in the region. It will address the shortage of senior school schools in Taveta and its surroundings, thus creating room in existing schools. More importantly, it will enhance access to quality education among students by bringing it near them, reducing lengthy distances to and from school, and more students enjoying better learning experiences.
At graduation, Lessesia will not only be a symbol of academic excellence but also an important source of local education development and equity.
