Kenya is on course to host two major continental football tournaments — the 9th edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025 and the 36th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

This was confirmed by Sports Principal Secretary (PS) Elijah Mwangi during a briefing with the Regional Integration Committee at Parliament Buildings.

Appearing before the Committee chaired by nominated MP Hon. Irene Mayaka, PS Mwangi affirmed that the government is finalizing key infrastructure upgrades and organizational plans ahead of the events.

He announced that Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium will be ready for CHAN matches by April 30, 2025.

“The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Treasury, has already facilitated the timely payment of $13 million as Kenya’s hosting fee,” stated Mwangi, emphasizing the government’s dedication to meeting CAF requirements.

PS Mwangi also noted that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania — the three co-hosts of AFCON 2027 — have jointly established Local Organizing Committees (LOCs). These bodies will coordinate preparations across the host nations.

However, committee members expressed concern over Kenya being allocated only two stadiums, while other countries may have more. “Why has Kenya only been allocated two stadiums, unlike other countries?” questioned Hon. Mayaka.

In response, the PS clarified that the allocation was influenced by compliance with specific CAF requirements, including proximity to international airports, availability of five-star hotels, and access to top-tier medical facilities.

He added that Kenya has been placed in Group A alongside Morocco, DRC Congo, and Zambia, a strategic grouping for visibility and competitiveness.

Mwangi further mentioned that several venues, including Kirigiti Stadium, Ulinzi Sports Complex, and Kasarani Annex, have been designated as training grounds for the tournaments.

He concluded by reassuring MPs of the government’s readiness and ambition. “We are committed to ensuring the successful hosting of CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027. Kenya is fully prepared and eager to showcase our talent and facilities on the continental stage,” said Mwangi.
