President William Ruto has reiterated Kenya’s commitment to global and regional peace initiatives following a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The two leaders discussed key security matters, including the UN’s support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti and efforts to stabilize the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During the discussion, Guterres acknowledged Kenya’s leadership in global peacekeeping efforts and commended the country’s commitment to restoring stability in Haiti.

Kenya has taken a frontline role in the UN-backed security mission, pledging to deploy police officers to help restore order in the crisis-hit Caribbean nation.

The initiative, which has received international support, is aimed at combating gang violence and strengthening governance structures in Haiti.

President Ruto also updated the UN Secretary-General on Kenya’s ongoing peace efforts in the eastern DRC. He emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, citing the recent joint summit between the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The summit, which brought together key stakeholders, endorsed a comprehensive roadmap outlining immediate, medium, and long-term actions to restore peace in the conflict-ridden region.

The eastern DRC has been plagued by persistent insecurity due to the presence of armed groups, leading to a humanitarian crisis affecting millions. Kenya has played a crucial role in peacekeeping efforts, including deploying troops under the EAC Regional Force and advocating for diplomatic solutions.

In the talks, President Ruto urged the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC peace efforts by providing technical and logistical assistance in implementing the roadmap. He emphasized that a coordinated approach between regional blocs and international institutions was essential for achieving sustainable peace.

Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting regional stability and sustainable conflict resolution. They underscored the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional organizations in addressing security threats across Africa.

Kenya has emerged as a key player in peace diplomacy, leveraging its influence to mediate conflicts in the region. President Ruto has consistently advocated for African-led solutions to security challenges, emphasizing the need for homegrown strategies backed by international support.

The latest engagement between Kenya and the UN highlights the country’s expanding role in global peacekeeping efforts and its unwavering commitment to fostering stability in conflict-prone regions.
