Kenya has taken a significant step towards hosting two major continental football events, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for both tournaments, signaling the country’s readiness to stage world-class competitions.

Speaking during the ceremony, Murkomen highlighted the potential of hosting such events to transform Kenya’s sporting landscape.

“Hosting international sporting events on the magnitude of CHAN and AFCON presents us a great opportunity to improve our sporting infrastructure, inspire the next generation of players, and raise our country’s profile globally,” he said.

The LOC comprises professionals from diverse sectors, including sports administration, media, and event management, with representation from the government, private sector, and sports fraternity.

Murkomen expressed confidence in the team, urging them to deliver historic tournaments.

He also emphasized the importance of prudent use of allocated resources to ensure the success of the events.

Preparations are already underway, with the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani undergoing upgrades to meet international standards in time for CHAN 2024, scheduled for February.

Nyayo Stadium and other training grounds are also in the final stages of renovation. These improvements aim to provide a seamless experience for players, officials, and fans alike.

The inauguration was graced by Mr. Kabelo Bosilong, the CAF Host Country Manager for Kenya, who reiterated CAF’s commitment to ensuring the tournaments proceed as planned.

He affirmed that Kenya, alongside its co-hosts, will deliver on its promise to showcase Africa’s football talent on a global stage.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were awarded the rights to co-host AFCON 2027, marking a historic moment for the East African region.

For CHAN 2024, Kenya is preparing to welcome the continent’s second-tier national teams, providing a platform for emerging football stars to shine.

The government’s efforts to boost sports infrastructure and capacity reflect its ambition to elevate Kenya’s standing in the global sports arena.

With CHAN just months away, all eyes are on the country as it prepares to deliver an unforgettable sporting experience.

Kenya’s co-hosting of these tournaments is set to not only promote football development but also create a legacy of excellence in sports management and infrastructure.
