Representatives from various professions gathered Friday for a stakeholder meeting aimed at addressing critical issues in North Rift counties, Kenya.

These issues include the prevalence of HIV, TB, and malaria, the existence of human rights barriers, the pervasiveness of stigma and discrimination, and the alarming rise in sexual offenses.

The meeting underscored the importance of a multifaceted approach to tackling these challenges. Participants highlighted the need for accurate and unbiased reporting, comprehensive education campaigns, and effective law enforcement.

In terms of reporting, journalists and editors were urged to exercise due diligence in their coverage of these sensitive issues, ensuring that their reporting is factual, objective, and free from sensationalism or stigmatizing language. This approach, participants emphasized, is essential to combating stigma and discrimination, which often arise from misconceptions and misinformation.

With regard to education, participants called for comprehensive campaigns that target various demographics and employ diverse communication channels. These campaigns, they stressed, should aim to raise awareness about these critical issues, dispel myths and misconceptions, and promote understanding and empathy.

On the law enforcement front, police officers and judicial officers acknowledged the need for effective measures to protect vulnerable groups and bring perpetrators of crimes to justice. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, judicial institutions, and community organizations to ensure that victims of crime receive the support and justice they deserve.

The participants reiterated the need for increased collaboration among different stakeholders, recognizing that no single entity can effectively address these complex and interconnected challenges. “By working together, they asserted, stakeholders can create a more comprehensive and effective approach to addressing critical issues in North Rift counties especially on sexual offences”.Said Senior Resident Magistrate Emily Kigen
