Kenya’s high-level security teams had a notable kind of leadership shake up after the quick redeployment of several senior gazetted officers , all okayed by Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja.

In what was described as an official note, the moves are supposed to help improve how things run, and to make operations feel more steady inside the specialized parts of the National Police Service. The message said the changes were done to “enhance efficiency” , and also to bolster day to day operational results across key departments.

Right in the middle of all this, Assistant Inspector General Johana Kiplangat Tonui has been reassigned from the Kenya Police Service Directorate of Operations. She’s now set to become the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), which is one of Kenya’s most visible security formations.

Alongside that, Assistant Inspector General Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa has been sent out of the GSU role, and will now act as the unit’s Deputy Commandant.

This reshuffle also seems to reach the internal oversight layers of the police service. Assistant Inspector General Paul Maingo Mumo, meanwhile, has been moved from the Directorate of Quality Assurance to head the Internal Affairs Unit, which handles probing of misconduct within the service.

The dispatch, which was addressed to Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat , said the appointments are meant to “optimize operational effectiveness” in the major departments.

The new postings started immediately.
