Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a one-month ultimatum to individuals harboring illegal firearms.
Speaking during the 27th Jukwaa La Usalama forum in Narok County on Monday, August 11, 2025, Murkomen said security agencies are keeping a watchful eye on individuals responsible for the smuggling of guns used in cattle rustling. He further remarked that illegal firearm trade is a major source of cultural conflicts within the region.
Murkomen revealed that detectives had unearthed a circuit taking guns from West Pokot County through the Kenya-Uganda border and into Narok County. “The security agencies have been tracking people who procure ammunition and guns from as far as West Pokot, through our border with Uganda, and bring them to Narok,” he said.
He appealed to owners of illicit firearms to surrender them peacefully to the National Police Service. Murkomen assured them they would not be prosecuted if they did that. “I have given the security team another month to arrest all these people. I am also extending an olive branch to all owners of illegal guns to surrender them immediately in a peaceful way,” he stated.
The CS repeated that the government is determined to disrupt the supply chain behind cattle rustling and banditry. He called on locals to support security operations by reporting suspicious persons and collaborating with security agents.
Murkomen said the government’s intervention in other regions is paying off. He said security along the volatile Kisumu-Kericho border has improved significantly.
After a high-level security meeting in Kericho, Murkomen said cattle theft — a long-standing cause of inter-community conflicts — had been contained in hotspots such as Nyakach and Sondu. “Cattle theft along the Kisumu and Kericho border has been contained to a great extent. We thank members of the public for their cooperation in the areas of Nyakach and Sondu,” he said.
In addition to apprehending cattle rustlers, the authorities have also targeted illegal butcheries linked to stolen livestock. Murkomen once more guaranteed the government’s commitment to peace and protection of livelihoods in all affected areas.
