The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel has provided an update on the ongoing recruitment process for the positions of Chairperson and Commission Members.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, the Panel’s Chairperson, Dr. Nelson Makanda, revealed that as of Monday, February 10, 2025, a total of 339 applications had been received.

The update was issued during the second day of a five-day stakeholder engagement and experience-sharing workshop in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

Dr. Makanda confirmed that the application process remains open and will officially close on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in accordance with the advertised timeline.

“As provided for in the IEBC Act Cap. 7C, ‘the Selection Panel shall, within seven days of its appointment, invite applications from qualified persons.’ Consequently, the panel called for applications through print media advertisements on February 1, 2025, and a Special Kenya Gazette notice on February 3, 2025.

The advert was also published on the Parliamentary Service Commission website,” said Dr. Makanda.

With the deadline approaching, the panel is engaging key stakeholders to ensure the recruitment process adheres to legal and procedural guidelines.

Responding to questions about applications submitted in 2023, the Panel’s Vice-Chairperson, Ms. Lindah Kiome, clarified that those applications are no longer valid.

“Any applicant who had applied previously back in 2023 should be aware that this is a new process, and all applications must be submitted within the stipulated deadline,” she stated.

The panel reassured the public that the selection process will be conducted transparently, guided by the Constitution, the IEBC Act Cap. 7C, and other relevant legal provisions.

Panel members also participated in sessions on recruitment best practices, facilitated by key officials.

Public Service Commission CEO and Secretary, Mr. Paul Famba, guided the panel through selection criteria and recruitment guidelines.

Ms. Margaret Igane, the Chief Human Resource Manager of Parliamentary Joint Services, provided insights into the longlisting and shortlisting processes.

Additionally, the panelists were trained on effective interview techniques and the use of modern Human Resource tools to ensure fair and merit-based selections.

With the recruitment process in full swing, the panel is expected to announce the shortlisted candidates after the application deadline.

This exercise is critical for ensuring that the IEBC is fully constituted in preparation for future electoral activities in Kenya.
