Ibrahim Rotich, the prime suspect in the murder of Agnes Tirop, has been released on bail by an Eldoret court following two years of detention.
In a landmark ruling, Justice Wananda Anuro granted Rotich conditional bail, setting the amount at Ksh 500,000 (approximately US$4,000). This decision comes after a lengthy legal battle, with Rotich initially denied bail due to concerns over witness tampering and potential flight risk.
The prosecution had argued against Rotich’s release, citing his alleged threats of suicide and lack of a permanent residence. However, Justice Anuro deemed these concerns insufficient to warrant continued detention, asserting that the circumstances surrounding the case had changed since Rotich’s initial arrest.
In imposing bail conditions, Justice Anuro outlined a series of strict measures designed to ensure Rotich’s compliance and prevent further interference with the ongoing investigation. These conditions include:
- Weekly reporting to the county directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) office in Eldoret.
- A strict prohibition against visiting the Iten crime scene.
- Restrictions on travel outside of Uasin Gishu County without prior permission from the DCI.
- Surrender of his passport to the court or DCI for safekeeping.
- Absolute restraint from interfering with or threatening any prosecution witnesses.
Failure to adhere to any of these conditions will result in immediate revocation of Rotich’s bail.
The case against Rotich is set to proceed with testimony from over ten witnesses, including the deceased’s parents, elder brother, and younger sister. Their accounts will shed light on the events leading up to Tirop’s tragic death and provide crucial evidence in determining Rotich’s guilt or innocence.
