Health Experts have cautioned Kenyans over consuming contaminated eggs that pose a major health risk.
According to a report from the Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD), sampled eggs from free-range chicken near dumpsites, e-waste and plastic waste recycling yards contained extremely high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which are dangerous organic compounds to one’s health.
The eggs people consume ‘boiled hawked eggs’ come from hens which feed on plants found in places contaminated with POPs, according to Dennis Otieno, a food scientist from University of Nairobi.
Boiled eggs are a common delicacy sold in most of the Kenyan streets , providing employment opportunities to hundreds of youth.
A research conducted by CEJAD shows that there have been high cases of Cholera and other health conditions in Nairobi and other major towns in Kenya brought about by presence of POPs which are the biggest health hazards.
