‘He Threatened to Kill Me’: Eldoret Mother Begs for Children’s Return from Powerful NTSA Official

Living in Constant Fear: Janeth (not her real name) pleads for safety and the return of her children amid threats from her powerful husband.
A woman in Eldoret is appealing for the safe return of her children and protection from her husband, a senior official at the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), following a distressing domestic incident in July. Married for seven years and a mother of three, the woman alleges her husband threatened her life, forcing her to flee their home and leave her children behind.
Describing the harrowing encounter, she recounted how her husband unexpectedly returned home one evening around 8 p.m. Without prior notice, he allegedly found her at the house, demanded she leave, and, when she hesitated, drew a pistol, pointed it at her, and threatened to kill her if she didn’t comply. Fearing for her life, she left immediately, packing only a few belongings and with no clear plan of where to go.
Since that night, she has been separated from her children, who her husband reportedly took to his mother’s home. She alleges that he has since threatened her with death should she attempt to see her children or return home. Despite filing a report with the police, she claims that little has been done to advance the investigation, leaving her feeling increasingly vulnerable and isolated.
“I have been away from my home for over five months now,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion. “I haven’t seen my children, and it’s tearing me apart. I gave birth to them, and being unable to care for them is a nightmare. I feel my life is in danger, and I fear he could manipulate the system against me, leaving me with no one to protect me.”
The woman also addressed accusations from her husband, who she says has repeatedly accused her of infidelity without evidence. “He has made baseless allegations, claiming I have someone else, but that is completely untrue. I have remained faithful in my marriage,” she stated.
Human rights activist Kimutai Kirui, a prominent advocate against domestic violence, voiced concern over rising cases of femicide and threats against women by their partners, calling for swift action from law enforcement. “We are witnessing a troubling increase in femicide, with women either being killed or threatened,” Kirui said. “The police must investigate all reports seriously, and anyone found guilty should face the full force of the law. In Eldoret alone, we have documented four similar cases, and we call on the authorities to act swiftly to protect women.”

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed that the woman’s case is under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kesses. “We are aware of the report made by the lady, and investigations are ongoing,” Mwanthi said. He emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, urging couples to address disputes through dialogue. “If you are being threatened, report it to the police, and we will take stern action against the perpetrators,” he added.
The woman is calling on authorities not only to guarantee her safety but also to restore custody of her children. She hopes law enforcement will intervene to secure her family’s safety, especially given her husband’s influential position.
As the investigation continues, the community awaits a resolution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of both the woman and her children.
