Government Strengthens Community Health Systems Through Data-Driven Planning, Says PS Mary Muthoni

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community health systems by improving the collection and use of reliable health data to guide service delivery and resource allocation across the country.
Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni made the remarks during the Community Health Assessment Data Verification exercise in Karau Ward, Ol Kalou Sub-County, where officials reviewed household health information collected by Community Health Promoters.
The exercise, led by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with county governments, aims to validate community health data to support evidence-based planning and enhance primary healthcare services.
Accurate Data Key to Better Healthcare
Muthoni said credible community health information is essential for identifying local health needs, directing resources to priority areas and improving access to quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable households.
She noted that the verification exercise will ensure that health interventions are based on accurate information while helping the government strengthen preventive and promotive healthcare services at the grassroots.
“The availability of reliable community health data enables the government to plan effectively, allocate resources efficiently and deliver targeted interventions that respond to the needs of communities,” she said.
Assessment Shows Progress in Karau Ward
According to preliminary findings from the assessment, Karau Ward has recorded encouraging progress in expanding access to healthcare services.
Muthoni said 59 percent of households assessed have registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA), reflecting continued efforts to expand universal health coverage.
She added that more than half of the respondents reported improved access to healthcare services over the past three years, an indication that ongoing investments in the health sector are beginning to deliver positive results.
The findings also highlighted areas where residents believe further improvements are needed to enhance healthcare delivery.
Residents Identify Key Health Priorities
The assessment showed that community members consider the availability of medicines, improved medical equipment and the recruitment of additional healthcare workers as the most urgent priorities for strengthening local health services.
Muthoni said the government will use the verified data to identify service gaps and implement targeted interventions aimed at improving healthcare outcomes.
She emphasized that community feedback remains an important component of health planning, ensuring that investments respond to the actual needs of residents.
Focus on Stronger Primary Healthcare
The Principal Secretary said the Ministry of Health remains committed to working closely with county governments and Community Health Promoters to build a resilient primary healthcare system capable of preventing disease and improving public health.
She noted that strengthening community health structures is central to the government’s broader agenda of achieving universal health coverage through preventive, promotive and curative healthcare services.
Muthoni said the verified household data will inform future policy decisions, support equitable distribution of health resources and improve the effectiveness of community-based health programmes across the country.
The Community Health Assessment Data Verification exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health to enhance evidence-based decision-making and ensure every community benefits from accessible, quality healthcare services.
