A 17-year-old South Sudanese refugee residing in Uasin Gishu County is celebrating after scoring an impressive A plain, with 82 points, in the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

Adhel Garang, a former student at Bunyore Girls High School in Vihiga County, attributed her academic success to hard work, the unwavering support of her teachers, and the encouragement of her classmates.

“Thirst for education forced my family to relocate me from Kakuma refugee camp to Eldoret,” said Garang, who currently lives with her mother in Kapsoya Estate.

Recalling her journey, Garang shared that her family initially sought refuge at Kakuma camp in Turkana County after fleeing conflict in South Sudan. “We settled briefly in Kakuma before moving to Eldoret, which we now call home,” she added.

Despite facing significant challenges, including studying in a congested two-bedroom house, Garang remained steadfast in her determination to excel academically. “The journey was tough, but through determination and faith in God, I managed to overcome all the challenges,” she said.

Garang attended Kapsoya Public Primary School, where she scored an impressive 410 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams in 2020. Her hard work paid off when she received an admission letter to join Bunyore Girls, one of the country’s leading national schools.

“It was a moment of great joy for me and my family,” said Garang, reflecting on her transition to secondary school.

With her eyes set on the future, Garang expressed her desire to pursue a career in medicine. “I want to study medicine at one of the public universities in the country and later specialize in providing medical care for sick children,” she revealed.

Having witnessed the vulnerabilities of children during South Sudan’s deadly civil conflicts, Garang is deeply passionate about improving children’s welfare. “Coming from a war-torn country, I have seen how children are the most vulnerable during such tough moments,” she said, affirming her commitment to making a difference in their lives.

Garang’s remarkable achievement stands as a testament to her resilience and unwavering dedication to her education.
