Former Kesses Member of Parliament and renowned medical entrepreneur Dr. Swaroop Ranjan Mishra has received major international recognition following his appointment as the Global Chairman of the Global Artificial Intelligence Institute (GAII), headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
The appointment, communicated through an official letter dated May 5, 2026, places the former Uasin Gishu legislator at the helm of an international institution dedicated to advancing the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence worldwide. The Institute said the appointment reflects its confidence in Dr. Mishra’s exceptional leadership, distinguished record of accomplishment, and enduring commitment to initiatives that improve lives and drive sustainable development.
According to the appointment letter, Dr. Mishra will provide strategic leadership and governance for the Institute’s global operations, champion partnerships between governments, academic institutions and the private sector, and guide the establishment of research, education and capacity-building initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive participation in the digital economy. He will also represent the organization in high-level engagements with heads of state, multilateral organizations and global thought leaders.
Speaking after accepting the appointment, Dr. Mishra described the recognition as both an honour and a responsibility.
“This appointment is not only a personal milestone but also an opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of responsible artificial intelligence globally. Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform economies, healthcare systems and societies. I look forward to working with stakeholders around the world to ensure that AI benefits all people and promotes inclusive development,” he said.
Dr. Mishra is widely known in Kenya as the founder and chairman of the Mediheal Group of Hospitals, one of the country’s leading private healthcare networks with operations extending across East Africa. Before serving as the Member of Parliament for Kesses Constituency from 2017 to 2022, he built a successful career as a medical entrepreneur and investor, overseeing the expansion of specialized healthcare services and creating employment opportunities for thousands of Kenyans.
Beyond healthcare, Dr. Mishra has been involved in numerous philanthropic initiatives supporting education, community development and access to quality healthcare. His leadership in both the public and private sectors has earned him recognition as one of the region’s most influential healthcare investors.
His career has not been without challenges. In recent years, allegations relating to transplant procedures at Mediheal Hospital attracted widespread public attention and led to investigations by various authorities. However, the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health subsequently exonerated both Dr. Mishra and Mediheal Hospital, finding no evidence directly linking them to wrongdoing. The committee’s findings were viewed by his supporters as a vindication of his professional reputation and decades-long contribution to Kenya’s healthcare sector.
Observers say the latest international appointment represents a significant endorsement of Dr. Mishra’s leadership credentials and resilience. Coming after years of public scrutiny and his successful tenure as Kesses MP, the appointment signals growing international recognition of his contributions to healthcare, governance and innovation.
A close associate welcomed the appointment, describing it as a proud moment for both Kenya and Uasin Gishu County.
“This appointment demonstrates that Dr. Mishra’s contribution to healthcare, leadership and innovation continues to be recognized globally. It is a proud moment not only for him but also for Uasin Gishu County and Kenya as a whole,” the associate said.
In its appointment letter, the Global Artificial Intelligence Institute expressed confidence that Dr. Mishra’s stewardship would strengthen global efforts aimed at ensuring artificial intelligence is developed and deployed responsibly, transparently and in the public interest. The organization said it looks forward to a new chapter of innovation, international cooperation and sustainable development under his leadership.
The honorary appointment took effect immediately and grants Dr. Mishra full authority and responsibilities vested in the Office of the Global Chairman. For many of his supporters, the appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a show of Kenya’s growing influence in global conversations on technology, innovation and digital transformation.
