Reverend Father Martin Chibole of the Catholic priesthood requested fathers to increase their family support activities while maintaining their children’s educational progress and proper guidance. He made the call while addressing mourners during the burial service of a Catholic faithful in Chavakali, Vihiga County.

Through his message, Rev. Chibole showed his worries about the increasing number of fathers who refuse to take their responsibilities because this behaviour negatively impacts all families and the whole community. He warned that when fathers neglect their responsibilities, children often suffer the most, facing challenges such as lack of school fees, poor discipline, and limited emotional support.

The priest established that fathers serve as family heads because their family presence and guidance, together with their permanent commitment to family life, create the most efficient means for developing their children’s future. He urged fathers to make education a top priority, explaining that schooling provides a firm foundation for personal growth, economic stability, and social development.

Rev. Chibole explains that education stands as the most efficient strategy to eliminate poverty while enabling young people to achieve long-term success. He urged parents, particularly fathers, to work hand in hand with their spouses to guide, nurture, and mentor their children both at home and in school. The parenting duty should be shared equally between both parents, according to him.

“Fathers must lead by example by providing for their families and ensuring their children remain in school,” Rev. Chibole said. The home environment demonstrates commitment and discipline and responsibility through which children show better concentration on their studies and personal development, according to him.

The priest educated families about how moral values, unity and mutual respect play essential roles in establishing strong families. He noted that families grounded in these principles are better equipped to overcome challenges and contribute positively to the community.

Rev. Chibole further called on community leaders, religious institutions, and other stakeholders to continue sensitising families on the importance of responsible parenting. The churches, together with community organizations should carry out their duty to help parents through their parenting programs which teach family relationships and discipline methods and child development skills.

The message acquired special significance because Vihiga County experienced increased rates of school dropouts and family disruptions. The problems occur because parents do not participate in school activities and families do not establish effective support networks.

The priest’s remarks served as a timely reminder of the vital role parents play in shaping society. The welfare of the community depends on how children receive their educational and nurturing support today.

Rev. Chibole concluded his speech by asking fathers to think about their family duties before renewing their dedication to their families. The building of stronger families and a stable and prosperous society becomes possible when parents show dedication and care by taking active parts in their children’s activities.
