Ex-Youth Leader David Maina Slams Government Over Abductions, High Taxes, and Stifling Free Speech
“The rising cost of living has left the youth struggling more than ever. Job opportunities are dwindling, and the heavy tax burden has made it almost impossible for many to meet their basic needs. These policies show a clear disregard for the welfare of ordinary Kenyans.”
The former National Youth Chairman, David Maina, has made an emphatic call to the Kenyan government to take immediate and decisive action to put an end to abductions targeting young people, particularly those who critique the government on social media platforms. Maina remarked, “These acts of intimidation and repression are not only undemocratic but also a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of freedom of expression. The youth are the backbone of our nation, and silencing them is equivalent to destroying the foundation of our future.”
In his speech, Maina expressed grave concern over the rising cost of living under the Kenya Kwanza administration, which he attributed to flawed economic and fiscal policies. He criticized the government, stating, “The increase in taxes on essential goods and services has pushed many Kenyans into financial distress. This year’s Christmas season, which is traditionally a time of celebration and family joy, has instead been overshadowed by economic hardship for most Kenyans.” He further noted that many families across the country could not afford to celebrate as they once did.
Maina elaborated on how these policies disproportionately burden ordinary citizens, especially young people. He observed, “The rising cost of living has left the youth struggling more than ever. Job opportunities are dwindling, and the heavy tax burden has made it almost impossible for many to meet their basic needs. These policies show a clear disregard for the welfare of ordinary Kenyans.”
Addressing the issue of freedom of expression, Maina emphasized its importance in a thriving democracy, saying, “The government must understand that criticism is not rebellion. It is a fundamental aspect of democracy. Using tactics like abductions and threats to silence dissent is unacceptable and a direct threat to our democratic values. Freedom of expression is not a privilege—it is a right.”
He also challenged the government to shift its focus to pressing economic and social issues affecting the public. “Instead of using public resources to suppress critics, the government should be concentrating on reducing the cost of living, creating job opportunities, and improving the quality of life for all citizens,” Maina said.
In conclusion, he urged the government to engage in open and constructive dialogue with citizens. “A true democracy is built on the voices of its people, including those that hold the government accountable. Only by listening to these voices can we achieve unity and prosperity as a nation,” he asserted. “Kenya deserves leadership that respects and protects the freedoms of its people, not one that rules through fear and intimidation.”
