The County Assembly of Embu has passed a budget of 7.31 billion Kenyan Shillings, allocating 69% to recurrent expenditure and 31% to development projects.
Committee Chairperson Johnson Mucangi announced that the assembly has approved Ksh 498 million for the health sector and set aside Ksh 120 million for road construction, Ksh 21 million for national government functions, and Ksh 100 million for the murraming of roads across the wards.
Additional budget allocations include Ksh 105 million for school bursaries, Ksh 25 million for vocational training centers, and Ksh 18 million for water projects.
Mucangi also stated that while the county has not changed the financial bill for 2023/2024, it has increased the revenue target from Ksh 750 million to 1 billion. “Through the employment of new enforcement officers and the transition from manual to digital revenue collection, the county surpassed its target and hopes to collect more. We have allocated a Ksh 20 million equalization fund to all 20 wards,” Mucangi said.
He added that the assembly has reduced office expenditure to reallocate funds to projects, including the construction of ten new markets. More funds have also been allocated to the youth and gender department through the Embu Youth Services Policy.
Mucangi urged the county government to manage funds prudently to allocate more resources for settling pending bills.
