Eldoret Legislator Kimani Wanjohi Condemns Uasin Gishu County’s Business License Fee Increase
Wanjohi has called upon Eldoret traders to resist paying the “punitive fees” and instead seek public engagement with the county leadership.
Kimani Wanjohi, the Huruma Ward MCA and Minority Leader at the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, has condemned the county government’s recent decision to double business license fees . Wanjohi argues that the increase is illegal as it was not included in the county’s budget bill.
“These new levies were not included in the County Finance Bill. Hence, their implementation remains illegal,” Wanjohi said while addressing the media outside the County Assembly Friday.

Wanjohi has called upon Eldoret traders to resist paying the “punitive fees” and instead seek public engagement with the county leadership. He has also threatened legal action if the county enforces the new fees .
“The new levies are meant to destroy businesses,” Wanjohi stated. “Most of the traders will be forced to shut down. The government is not in the business of making profits, rather promoting an enabling business environment for traders. Some of the traders who have been paying a license fee of Ksh 9,000 are now being forced to pay upto 30,000,” he lamented.
This is not the first time Wanjohi has clashed with the Uasin Gishu County Government. He recently led matatu operators in defying a relocation directive issued by the county government. The operators argued that the new terminus lacked proper amenities and sufficient space to accommodate all matatus.
Eldoret is expected to be elevated to city status in the coming weeks.
