Eldoret Detectives Bust Gang Impersonating ELDOWAS Staff in Foiled Robbery Attempt
The case was reported at Naiberi Police Station under OB No. 22/16/04/2025.
Detectives in Eldoret have unraveled a network of robbery with violence suspects who have been targeting homes while posing as employees of the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS). The gang’s latest attempt was foiled after an alert homeowner raised an alarm, attracting nearby security officers.
During the incident, police officers manning the residence of Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Eddyson Nyale swiftly responded. One of the suspects was shot in the left hand as he attempted to escape. Four other accomplices managed to flee on foot.
The injured suspect, identified as Luvira Muhati, was later arrested and taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for treatment under police guard. After his discharge, he was arraigned before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan on Friday.
Appearing before the court, Police Inspector Joyce Tunge sought 10 days to detain the suspect pending further investigations. In her sworn affidavit, Inspector Tunge stated, “The respondent was arrested on suspicion of having committed the offence of robbery with violence contrary to section 295(2) of the Penal Code.”
The case was reported at Naiberi Police Station under OB No. 22/16/04/2025.
According to police investigations, the respondent and his accomplices approached the complainant’s house under the pretense of being ELDOWAS staff sent to fix a solar panel. They requested the homeowner to provide them with a ladder. However, after the homeowner refused to open the door, the suspects forcefully broke in using a metal bar.
Once inside, the gang assaulted the homeowner and robbed him of two mobile phones and Sh39,040 in cash. The complainant’s screams alerted officers stationed at the County Commissioner’s residence, who intervened and shot Muhati, preventing a possible escape.
Inspector Tunge added, “During the incident, members of the public attempted to subject the suspect to mob justice, but police officers intervened and rushed him to hospital for emergency treatment.”
The police revealed that both the suspect and the complainant are yet to complete their medical reports and statements, necessitating the extended detention.
The court agreed to the prosecution’s request, granting police 10 more days to hold the suspect, noting that he posed a flight risk as his place of residence remains unknown. The suspect did not oppose the application.
The case is scheduled for mention on May 6, 2025.
