Daughter of Slain Marathon Champion Among Key Witnesses in Murder Trial
Among those facing trial is Rose Chepkemboi Rotich, a former clinical officer at Kabarnet County Referral Hospital in Baringo County.
The daughter of the late former marathon champion Samson Kandie, Vienna Kandie, is among more than 20 key witnesses lined up to testify against three prime suspects — including her biological mother — in a case where they are charged with his murder.
During a mention of the case before Justice Reuben Nyakundi at the Eldoret High Court, lead prosecutor Sidi Kirenge revealed that the prosecution would rely on both photographs and other forms of digital evidence to build their case against the accused.
“Your Lordship, we also intend to call experts, among them the government pathologist, to prove our case against the accused persons,” said Ms. Kirenge.
Among those facing trial is Rose Chepkemboi Rotich, a former clinical officer at Kabarnet County Referral Hospital in Baringo County. Ms. Rotich was arrested alongside two other suspects — Vincent Ngososei Kiprono and Jamlick Kiptoon Morogit — by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following investigations into Kandie’s murder.
The late Kandie, a former Vienna City Marathon champion, was hacked to death by unknown assailants on October 4, 2024, within the premises of his Elgon View residence in Eldoret City. According to police reports, nothing of value was stolen from the deceased during the attack, apart from his mobile phone.
Ms. Rotich and her co-accused have since denied killing the 53-year-old former athlete. The court has denied them bond on security grounds, and they remain in custody at the Eldoret GK Remand Prison pending their trial, which is scheduled for May 14 and 15.
The suspects’ latest plea to have the court review and overturn the denial of bail was dismissed for a third time.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that Ms. Rotich had a longstanding domestic feud with her late husband prior to the incident that led to her being implicated in his death.
