For the first time, all champions who have brought glory to Eldoret on the global stage will enjoy special privileges, including free city parking across Eldoret streets, Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim announced during the media launch of the 7th edition of the Eldoret City Marathon today.

Scheduled for April 26th, the marathon has grown into one of Africa’s premier city races and a showcase of Eldoret’s global running heritage. The launch also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a structured framework to guarantee professional delivery and long-term sustainability of the event.

“This marathon celebrates our athletic heritage and provides a platform for our champions to shine globally,” Governor Bii said.

He added“We will identify and honour all champions who have made Eldoret proud, recognising their legacy and inspiring future generations to uphold our tradition of excellence.”

He added that this year’s edition continues to attract both elite athletes and rising stars. “With KSh 15 million in prize money, the Eldoret City Marathon is one of Africa’s most competitive city races. The MOU ensures that every edition is organised professionally and sustainably, offering a world-class experience for athletes and fans alike.”

Race Director Moses Tanui said the marathon has become a flagship sporting and tourism event, drawing international participants and stimulating local enterprise.

“Many past competitors have used the race as a springboard to global success, cementing Eldoret’s reputation as the birthplace of world-class athletes,” he said.

Tanui also highlighted the marathon’s commitment to sustainability. “In addition to sporting excellence, the event promotes environmental conservation, tree planting, and green event management, reflecting Eldoret’s dedication to hosting responsible, high-standard events,” he added.
