Drunken County Staff Exposed! Union Warns of No Protection Amid Rising Absenteeism Scandal
“It was embarrassing for some of our members to showcase their drinking habits in the full view of the county boss while on duty,” said Wangwero. “Unless this behavior stops, the union will cease defending anyone found on the wrong side.”

The Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) has raised concerns over an alarming trend where regional government employees fail to report to work due to alcohol abuse.
Hassan Wangwero, the Uasin Gishu chapter Secretary, lamented that the issue is particularly prevalent among junior county staff, urging them to exercise self-discipline and uphold their professional responsibilities.
According to Wangwero, county enforcement officers and drivers are the most affected, with cases of drunkenness and absenteeism becoming increasingly common.
“It has become difficult for the union to defend such employees, especially when their misconduct is displayed openly in front of the county leadership,” he stated.
He further highlighted growing indiscipline and absenteeism among some staff members, adding that the union has, on multiple occasions, had to intervene on their behalf.
However, Wangwero cautioned the affected employees against taking the union’s support for granted, emphasizing that engaging in acts of insubordination would no longer be tolerated.
His remarks followed a recent incident where Governor Jonathan Bii encountered intoxicated county drivers during his visit to the county government’s yard in Eldoret.
“It was embarrassing for some of our members to showcase their drinking habits in the full view of the county boss while on duty,” said Wangwero. “Unless this behavior stops, the union will cease defending anyone found on the wrong side.”
Wangwero made the remarks at Home Craft Centre on the outskirts of Eldoret town during the Annual General Meeting and elections for the Uasin Gishu County Staff Benevolent Fund Scheme.
During the election, David Kendagor was elected unopposed as the branch chairman, while Sally Sang secured the position of branch secretary with 68 votes, defeating William Kiplagat (58 votes) and Sally Kotie (16 votes).
For the position of branch treasurer, Christopher Mukolwe emerged victorious with 97 votes, while his closest contender, Shadrack Chirchir, garnered 35 votes, followed by Daniel Kimutai, who secured 16 votes.
