DCI Dismisses KTN News, Standard Report on Alleged Interception of Election Materials as False
The Directorate expressed concern over the timing of the report, noting it comes as the country begins preparations for the 2027 General Elections.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed as false and misleading a report aired by KTN News and published by The Standard newspaper linking the agency to an alleged interception of a vehicle at the Uganda border.
In a statement dated September 28, 2026, and signed by John Marete, HSC, for the Director of Criminal Investigations, the DCI said it had noted with grave concern the publications which claimed its officers intercepted a vehicle at the Uganda border, questioned three occupants, and confiscated election-related materials.
The media reports further alleged that a DCI officer was linked to investigations into alleged electoral malpractice involving IEBC voter registration materials, and that the said officer was warned to abandon the matter or face transfer, and was thereafter transferred to DCI Headquarters.
The DCI has now termed those claims as inaccurate and without foundation.
“There is no such officer, no such arrest as portrayed and no such transfer linked to any electoral investigation as described in the report. The publication is therefore misleading,” the statement reads.
The Directorate expressed concern over the timing of the report, noting it comes as the country begins preparations for the 2027 General Elections. It also faulted KTN News for failing to seek a right of reply from the DCI before airing and publishing the story.
“Responsible journalism on matters of national security and electoral integrity requires verification and an opportunity for the institution concerned to respond,” the DCI stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the agency said it will continue to support a free, fair, transparent and credible electoral process and discharge its mandate professionally, impartially and strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
“No officer of the DCI is above the law, and no officer is instructed to abandon a lawful investigation,” the statement added.
The DCI further urged media houses and practitioners to exercise the highest standards of responsibility and professionalism when reporting on sensitive electoral and security matters, emphasizing that verification of facts before publication is essential to public confidence in institutions and to the integrity of the electoral process.
The Directorate said it will formally register its concern with the relevant statutory bodies mandated to uphold media standards and accountability, while fully respecting the constitutional guarantee of media freedom.
“The public is advised to treat the KTN report as unfounded,” the statement concluded.
